The booklets are "Saddle Stitched" meaning there are 2 staples on the spine of the booklet holding it together.

You can write on glossy booklets using a Sharpie or permanent marker, but for best results—especially if you plan to write with pens or pencils—we recommend our uncoated 70lb booklets, which are designed for easy writing.
